Easy Strategy to Help Kids Make Friends

Teach Your Child How to Properly Listen To Others

The more you practice any skill, the better you get at it...right? The best thing to practice with your child who may struggle socially (even more than math facts) is how to be a good listener.

This video will teach your child the importance of listening and the benefits of listening. Research has proven time and time again that children who know how to listen to others have more friends and can sustain conversation much better than kids who don't know how to listen. Listening is one of the most important conversational skills you can teach your child.

Let's Practice: Turn and Talk with your child or student. Explain to them that you are going to practice a very important social skill called Active Listening. Start by asking them to tell you their favorite food and why. As they begin talking, make sure your body is facing them, you are giving direct eye contact and acknowledging what they are saying by nodding your head at the appropriate times. When they finish, re-tell their words back to them. For example, " Your favorite food is spaghetti because you like to twirl it around your fork." Now switch roles and have them ask you what your favorite food is. Explain to them that you are practicing how to be a good listener and need them to: 1. Look directly in your eyes 2. Listen as carefully as they can because you are going to ask them to repeat what you said back to you

3. To show you they are listening by nodding when appropriate (you may have to show them the appropriate times to nod).

Have fun with this activity and don't forget to look for ANYTHING that your child does correctly with this activity and tell them. Noticing the positive actions of any kind over noticing the negative, is a definite plus for the improvement of their behavior AND for the way they feel about themselves!
