It's easy for some, harder for others. Why not help your child or student by giving them a few quick tips to help them in this area???
An Easy Way to Keep a Conversation Going is to:
Ask your talking partner questions. Simple as that!
Make sure the questions are on topic with what they are talking about.
Let's Practice Let's brainstorm together some questions you can ask someone to get more information about their "story." For Example: Your friend is telling you she had a soccer game this past weekend. What would be a good question to ask your friend if you want her to keep talking to you and get to know her even better? How did you play? What was the score? How was the other team? Have them come up with at least one example with your help!
Let's Practice
A great conversation is like a game of tennis. The ball goes back and forth between both sides of the net continuously until the game is over. In conversation with someone everyone should get a turn to talk and take a turn listening.
Conversation Script Activity
Tasha: Hello! (Smiles and gives Isaiah eye contact)
Isaiah: Hello! (Smiles and gives Tasha eye contact)
Tasha: What are your plans for this weekend?
Isaiah: I don't really have much going on this weekend. I will probably hang out with my family and work on my school project. What about you?
Tasha: Oh very nice. I have a family party to go to and I'm going to see my cousins!
** What did you notice? Did both Tasha and Isaiah have a chance to speak? Did they both have a chance to listen?
Challenge Questions:
1.What did Isaiah do to keep the conversation going?
2. What could Isaiah say next to show Tasha he was listening and is
interested in her weekend?
3. What could Isaiah ask Tasha to keep the conversation going?
