Mindfulness is the practice of being aware of the present moment. It's amazing how hard this can be to put into practice, especially if you aren't used to it. By teaching yourself and your students/children to be mindful, you are doing them a world of good and opening them up to a world of possibilities!
Benefits of Meditation
#1 You become much more focused. When you practice meditation, you are teaching your brain how to focus. You are training your brain to be aware of the present moment and the more you practice, the easier it will become for you to focus.
#2 Meditation can relax you in the moment, especially if you are having a strong emotion. Teaching your kids to simply breathe in and out when they are struggling with a tough emotion or difficult situation, can be a game changer for them. Once they learn how to relax themselves through this method, they can think clearer and come up with an appropriate resolution to their problem.
#3 You can do it anywhere and anytime. Meditation doesn't have to be a big production. It could simply be focusing on your breath or noticing different objects in the room you are sitting in, to bring you back to the present moment.
One way to teach kids to meditate in school is through books that teach simple techniques that are easy to follow.
Below is a power point lesson that I put together that teaches a meditative technique to help them to calm themselves down. It includes the book the Angry Ninja written by Mary Nhin. It has a simple strategy to help stay calm. It uses a meditative breathing technique and is a great tool to teach your kids and students!
