Below is a video that discusses what stress is and healthy ways to handle it.
A very effective way at identifying how you are feeling at any given moment is to look at this mood meter and see where you fall on it. Try to figure out why you chose the feeling you chose and what may have happened that got you there. If you chose a negative feeling, try different coping techniques that will help you feel better. Whatever works for you best is a tool you should try to repeat next time you are feeling less then your best!
Relaxing Coping Strategies
1.Think of a calm happy place or of a happy memory of something that makes you laugh
2.Listen to calming music or your favorite music that gets you singing
3. Take some deep breaths.
4. Have a drink of cold water and/or wash your face with cold water.
5. Take a break or a quick rest
Ideally, we want to be able to take these steps:
1. Identify our feelings
2. Identify a coping skill she can use to cope with that feeling
3. Use the skill effectively
It takes time and practice to develop these skills on our own. It will be very helpful for your child, to try to be their inner voice. You may notice your child getting upset over something before they notice it themselves. When you know they are starting to show signs of frustration, you can say something like, "Did you notice your face getting hot? It looked very red." "Are you noticing if you are feeling frustrated or angry etc. about anything? What about taking some deep breaths and/or taking a break for a little while to listen to some music." By guiding your child this way. you will be helping them make that connection between their body, their feeling and being able to make a choice to help themselves stay calm.
